Microsoft announces updates to SQL 2016 and Windows Server 2016 certifications

As a professional in this field, you may be wondering what steps you will need to take to maintain the certifications you currently hold or you may be looking to gain a MCSA certification as a stepping-stone to MCSE? Whatever path you are on, you should be aware of these recent updates.

Windows Server 2016 certification

For Windows Server 2016, Microsoft have announced the release of the new MCSA: Windows Server 2016 certification. To maintain your credentials, you will be required to take and pass the following three exams:

  • 70-740 - Installation, Storage, and Compute with Windows Server 2016
  • 70-741 - Networking with Windows Server 2016
  • 70-742 - Identity with Windows Server 2016

However, there is good news for individuals who currently hold either an MCSA: Windows Server 2012 or MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certification. You will be able to upgrade to the new 2016 certification through a single, upgrade exam:

  • 70-743* - Upgrade Your Skills to MCSA: Windows Server 2016

Courses corresponding to all four Windows Server 2016 exams are currently scheduled for release in September 2016 and practice tests will be available after each exam beta period ends.
Word from Microsoft is that the new options for specialisation and continuing education through the MCSE program will be announced later this summer.

*Exam 743 is scheduled for beta release in late July 2016.

SQL 2016 certification

The release of three new MCSA:SQL 2016 certifications is important news for professionals working with both on premise and cloud-based databases.
What steps will you need to take in order to retain your certifications?

MCSA: SQL 2016 Database Development can be earned by taking and passing the following two exams:

  • 70-761 - Querying Data with Transact-SQL
  • 70-762 - Developing SQL Databases

Individuals who currently hold an MCSA: SQL Server 2012/2014 certification can upgrade by taking and passing exam 70-762.  This exam is scheduled for beta release in September 2016, with exam 70-761 following soon after.

MCSA: SQL 2016 Database Administration can be achieved by taking and passing the following two exams:

  • 70-764 - Administering a SQL Database Infrastructure
  • 70-765 - Provisioning SQL Databases

If you currently hold a MCSA: SQL Server 2012/2014 certification, then you can upgrade by taking and passing exam 70-765.  This exam is scheduled for beta release in September 2016, with exam 70-764 following soon after.

MCSA: SQL 2016 Business Intelligence Development can be earned by taking and passing the following two exams:

  • 70-767 - Implementing a SQL Data Warehouse
  • 70-768 - Developing SQL Data Models

Individuals who currently hold an MCSA: SQL Server 2012/2014 certification can upgrade by taking and passing exam 70-768.  Exam 768 is scheduled for beta release in September 2016, with exam 70-767 following soon after.

Training courses corresponding to all six SQL 2016 exams are currently available, while practice tests will be available shortly after each exam beta period ends.
New options for specialisation and continuing education through the MCSE program will be announced later this summer.
